The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) stands as a proud testament to accessible higher education in its region. What began as a local initiative has blossomed into a comprehensive college dedicated to serving its community. CSM's journey began in September 1958, not as the institution it is today, but as Charles County Junior College, offering evening classes at La Plata High School. Expanding its offerings, the college introduced an apprenticeship program in 1960, demonstrating an early focus on practical, career-oriented education crucial for local workforce development.

The institution continued to grow, marking a significant milestone in 1968 with the commencement of construction for its Career Education and Administration Building on what is now the main La Plata campus. This physical expansion solidified its presence and ambition. The culmination of this evolution arrived on July 1, 2000, when Charles County Community College officially embraced its broader identity, becoming the College of Southern Maryland – a name reflecting its expansive reach and dedication to the wider Southern Maryland community.
