The college's history is one of expansion and resilience. Initially formed to serve Humboldt County, the district grew significantly in the 1970s, welcoming residents from coastal Mendocino and Del Norte counties, and extending its reach into a portion of Trinity County. This growth underscores its dedication to meeting the educational needs of a broad regional population. Despite facing accreditation challenges in 2012, College of the Redwoods demonstrated its unwavering commitment to excellence, successfully resolving all concerns and reaffirming its accreditation in 2014, a testament to its robust leadership and community support.

Committed to fostering a modern and effective learning environment, the college has invested substantially in its facilities. Thanks to the overwhelming support of local voters, Bond Measure Q/B in 2006 secured over $40 million for significant upgrades and renovations across its main campus and branch locations in Crescent City and Fort Bragg, as well as the acquisition of the Garberville Site. Under the leadership of President Keith Flamer, College of the Redwoods continues to evolve, ensuring that current and future students benefit from state-of-the-art resources and a student experience geared towards success and personal growth.
