About Colorado Mountain College

Colorado Mountain College: Empowering communities and fostering growth across the breathtaking Rockies since 1965.

Colorado Mountain College (CMC) stands as a beacon of educational opportunity nestled within the stunning landscape of the Colorado Rockies. More than just a college, CMC is a vibrant, community-driven institution that has been empowering students across multiple counties since its inception. Known for its accessible, high-quality education and deep roots in the communities it serves, CMC proudly became a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in 2021, reflecting its commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The story of Colorado Mountain College began in 1965 when visionary voters from five Colorado counties enthusiastically approved the formation of a college district. This grassroots beginning set the stage for a unique educational journey. With the name "Colorado Mountain College" quickly adopted, the first residential campuses in Leadville and Spring Valley at Glenwood Springs welcomed students in the fall of 1967. Despite an early tragedy with the passing of its first president, the college rapidly expanded its reach, adding courses in Summit County by 1972 and achieving full accreditation from the North Central Association in 1974, solidifying its academic standing.

CMC’s academic landscape is continuously evolving to meet the needs of its students and the region. A significant development was the opening of The Isaacson School for Communication, Arts, & Media at the Spring Valley campus in 2012, offering cutting-edge programs. The college's expansion has been a testament to its community engagement, with areas like Salida and Poncha Springs voting to join the special taxing district, thus creating new learning centers. Students at CMC benefit from a supportive, multi-campus environment that fosters personal growth and academic success, all while being immersed in the unparalleled beauty and recreational opportunities of the Rocky Mountains.
