Founded in 1851, it holds the remarkable distinction of being chartered as the first women's college west of the Mississippi River by a state legislature, setting a precedent for female education.

Originally established as Christian Female College in Columbia, Missouri, the institution emerged during a time when the city championed female education, partly due to the University of Missouri not yet admitting women. Early days were characterized by a dedicated pursuit of knowledge, with students engaging in a rigorous curriculum that included arithmetic, ancient history, grammar, philosophy, and theological studies. Life for these pioneering students was disciplined, commencing with early morning walks and worship, followed by intensive classes, daily compositions, chores, and evening Bible lectures, fostering a strong academic and moral foundation.

The college quickly grew, formally dedicating its campus in 1852 after acquiring the estate of Dr. James Bennett.
