Columbia-Greene Community College

The college's journey began in early 1966 when both county boards established a steering committee to explore the feasibility of a joint community college. This vision quickly materialized, with initial funding and a charter granted by the end of the year. C-GCC officially opened its doors in September 1969, welcoming an inaugural class of 350 full-time and part-time students. For its first five years, the college operated out of a charming old schoolhouse in Athens, New York, highlighting its grassroots beginnings and commitment to accessible education.

Demonstrating its commitment to academic excellence and student success, C-GCC celebrated a significant milestone just two years after opening, awarding 35 associate degrees to its first graduating class in 1971. This early achievement underscored the college's immediate impact on its students' lives. Further cementing its educational quality, C-GCC achieved full accreditation status by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 1975, ensuring that students receive a recognized and valuable education that prepares them for diverse paths.
