Columbia-Greene Community College

Columbia-Greene Community College (C-GCC) stands as a vital educational cornerstone for Columbia and Greene counties, offering accessible and quality higher education. Known for its strong commitment to local community development, C-GCC provides a pathway to associate degrees and career advancement, preparing students for both immediate professional roles and seamless transfer to four-year institutions.

The college's journey began in early 1966, when visionary leaders from both counties formed a steering committee to explore the creation of a joint community college. This initiative quickly gained traction, securing initial funding and a charter from the SUNY Board of Trustees and the New York State Board of Regents by the end of that same year. C-GCC officially opened its doors in September 1969, welcoming an inaugural class of 350 full-time and part-time students under its first president, Edward J. Owen.

From its humble beginnings operating out of an old schoolhouse in Athens, New York, C-GCC rapidly established itself as a reputable institution. Just two years after opening, the college celebrated a significant milestone, awarding 35 associate degrees to its first graduating class in 1971. Its dedication to academic excellence was formally recognized in 1975 when it achieved full accreditation status from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, solidifying its standing as a trusted provider of higher learning.
