Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania stands as a pioneering institution in higher education, officially established in 2022 through the visionary consolidation of Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield Universities. This innovative public university offers a distinctive multi-campus experience, blending the rich legacies and academic strengths of its founding institutions into a unified, forward-looking learning environment. It represents a bold new chapter designed to provide accessible, high-quality education across diverse settings.

The university's foundation was laid in 2021 when the PASSHE Board of Governors took a strategic step to address evolving educational landscapes, including declining enrollment and rising tuition, by consolidating six schools into two regional campuses. Commonwealth University emerged from this initiative, bringing together the cherished traditions of Bloomsburg University, Lock Haven University, and Mansfield University. This consolidation created a powerful new entity, while carefully preserving the individual character of each campus.

Students at Commonwealth University benefit from a vibrant academic and student life, with curriculum integration across all three campuses completed by August 2024, ensuring a cohesive yet diverse educational offering. Each campus proudly maintains its unique identity, celebrated through distinct mascots, official colors – the Husky (Maroon and Gold) for Bloomsburg, the Bald Eagle (Crimson and White) for Lock Haven, and the Mountaineers (Red and Black) for Mansfield. The university actively participates in the NCAA Division II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, fostering a strong spirit of athletic achievement. Dr. Bashar W. Hanna, who had previously led Bloomsburg and served as interim president for Lock Haven and Mansfield, was named the inaugural president in July 2022, guiding the institution through its formative years.
