Born in 2022, Commonwealth University is a dynamic public institution designed to provide an expansive and accessible education across its Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield campuses. This innovative model allows students to benefit from the resources of a larger university while experiencing the distinct traditions and vibrant communities of each unique campus, offering a truly diverse and engaging educational journey.

The university's story began in 2021 when the PASSHE Board of Governors embarked on a strategic vision to address evolving educational landscapes. By consolidating Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield Universities, Commonwealth University was created to strengthen regional education in Pennsylvania. Dr. Bashar W. Hanna, who previously led Bloomsburg and served as interim president for the others, was officially named the inaugural president in July 2022, guiding the institution through its foundational years. The first cohort of students arrived in August 2022, with a commitment to fully integrating the curriculum of all three institutions by August 2024.

Students at Commonwealth University enjoy a spirited collegiate experience, supported by a unified academic framework and vibrant campus life. Each campus proudly maintains its unique identity, celebrated through distinct mascots like the Bloomsburg Husky, Lock Haven Bald Eagle, and Mansfield Mountaineers, alongside their traditional colors. The university champions athletic excellence, competing in NCAA Division II within the highly regarded Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. While continually evolving, as demonstrated by the recent announcement regarding the Clearfield campus closure by the 2026-27 academic year, Commonwealth University remains dedicated to providing a forward-thinking education grounded in historical strength.
