Community College of Rhode Island

The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) stands as the state's largest public community college, a dynamic and accessible institution committed to providing quality education for a diverse student body. Since its inception, CCRI has been a cornerstone for Rhode Islanders seeking pathways to higher education, career advancement, and personal growth, serving over 16,000 students annually. Founded in 1964 as Rhode Island Junior College (RIJC) with a modest enrollment of 325 students, CCRI quickly outgrew its initial temporary location at the Henry Barnard School. The transformation of a portion of the former Brown & Sharpe manufacturing facility in 1965 provided crucial classroom space, paving the way for significant expansion. A pivotal moment arrived in 1972 with the opening of the Knight Campus in Warwick, marking the school's first permanent and flagship facility. This foundational growth led to the establishment of three additional campuses and two satellite locations, demonstrating CCRI's commitment to accessibility across the state. In 1980, the institution officially embraced its broader mission, adopting the name Community College of Rhode Island.
