Conception Seminary College

Conception Seminary College offers a truly unique educational journey, deeply steeped in the Benedictine tradition. Established in 1873 by pioneering Benedictine monks from the Swiss abbey of Engelberg, it was founded with a dual purpose: to serve as a refuge for monastic life and to provide vital spiritual care for the growing communities of Irish and German settlers in northwest Missouri. This founding vision continues to shape a distinctive environment focused on formation and service.

The institution's history is rich with significant figures and milestones. Founders Fathers Frowin Conrad and Meinrad Widmer laid the groundwork for what would quickly become Conception Abbey in 1881, with Fr. Frowin later serving as its first abbot. This vibrant early community not only thrived but also played a role in the establishment of other significant monastic foundations, such as Mount Angel Abbey. From its very beginnings, Conception fostered a robust community life, as evidenced by the 22 monks and 24 sisters residing there by 1880.
