About Concordia University-Irvine

Concordia-Irvine: Fostering wise, honorable citizens in sunny Southern California.

Concordia University-Irvine stands as a distinguished private institution nestled in the vibrant community of Irvine, California. Guided by its inspiring motto, "Developing Wise, Honorable, and Cultivated Citizens," Concordia-Irvine is committed to a holistic educational experience rooted in its Lutheran heritage. As a proud member of the national Concordia University System, it offers a unique blend of academic rigor and character formation designed to prepare students for meaningful lives and careers.

The roots of Concordia-Irvine trace back to the vision of Dr. Victor Behnken in 1955, who proposed a preparatory college for the Pacific Southwest district of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). This vision gained momentum, with the LCMS agreeing to build the school in 1962. A pivotal moment came when The Irvine Company generously offered the present location, leading to the appointment of Rev. Dr. Charles Manske as founding president in 1973. The institution officially opened its doors in 1976 as Christ College Irvine.

The university evolved significantly, transforming its name to Concordia University Irvine in February 1993. This change not only reflected its broader academic scope but also solidified its place as the tenth campus within the esteemed Concordia University System. Through its commitment to its founding principles and its connection to a vast educational network—the LCMS operates the second largest church-operated school system in the U.S.—Concordia-Irvine continues to provide an enriching environment where students are empowered to grow intellectually, spiritually, and personally.
