Concordia University-Nebraska

Concordia University-Nebraska stands as a vibrant private university, currently serving 2,300 students under the leadership of President Bernard Bull. Founded in 1894, this institution has a rich history rooted in educational excellence, originally established as the Evangelisches Lutherisches Schullehrer-Seminar.

From its earliest days in Seward, Nebraska, the university benefited from strong community support, which helped it grow from its initial 13 students taught in a single building. The academic scope expanded significantly over time, with the addition of college studies in 1905 and a fourth year of high school by 1908, evolving far beyond its original seminary structure. Despite being affectionately known as "The German College," English was also an integral part of its curriculum.

The institution demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability, particularly during challenging times. With the outbreak of World War I, it bravely confronted anti-German sentiment by proudly changing the language of all its classes to English and erecting a towering flagpole. Further tests of its fortitude included navigating the devastating 1918 flu pandemic, which affected a significant portion of its student body. Following the war, the school continued to evolve, achieving accreditation as a junior college and becoming co-educational in 1919, though women initially boarded off-campus.
