Concordia University-Wisconsin

Concordia University-Wisconsin stands as a testament to growth and dedication, evolving from a small pre-theology institution into a comprehensive university renowned for its diverse academic offerings and strong Lutheran heritage. Located in Mequon, Wisconsin, CUW has distinguished itself as one of the largest Lutheran universities in the United States, providing a vibrant educational environment for students pursuing a wide array of professional and liberal arts studies.

Founded in 1881 as a gymnasium in Milwaukee, its initial mission was to prepare young men for pastoral careers within the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. Over the decades, it progressively expanded its curriculum, adding more years of instruction and eventually opening its doors to women in its junior college program in 1964. This foundational period laid the groundwork for its future expansion, emphasizing a classical education while steadily adapting to meet broader educational needs.

The true turning point came with its move to the picturesque Mequon campus in 1982 and its subsequent achievement of full university status in 1990. Under the visionary leadership of President R. John Buuck, Concordia University-Wisconsin experienced unprecedented growth, introducing popular programs in business, nursing, adult education, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. This expansion propelled CUW to become the largest Lutheran college and university in North America by 1996, doubling its enrollment in just over a decade. Its commitment to innovation is further exemplified by the launch of its School of Pharmacy, making it one of only three institutions in Wisconsin to offer a Pharm.D. degree. In 2013, CUW also integrated Concordia University Ann Arbor, extending its reach and impact.
