CUNY Hostos Community College stands as a vibrant educational pillar in the heart of the South Bronx. Established in 1968, it was uniquely born from the passionate demands of the Hispanic/Puerto Rican community, who sought a dedicated institution to serve the people of the South Bronx. From its inception, Hostos was a trailblazer, initially recognized as the only bilingual education college in the region. While its bilingual policy evolved after 1997, the college proudly maintains its commitment to linguistic diversity, offering numerous courses in Spanish. This legacy ensures that students from diverse backgrounds can find a supportive and familiar learning environment. In 1970, Hostos welcomed its first class of 623 students, marking the beginning of its profound impact on countless lives, first from a former tire factory and later from a larger, modern campus.
