York College's early years were defined by adaptability. Opening in September 1967, it initially operated from temporary locations across Queens, earning its original "Nomads" mascot. The New York City fiscal crisis of the 1970s tested its resolve, delaying the construction of its permanent campus and sparking debates about its future. Yet, through perseverance, York not only survived but thrived.

The dawn of a new era arrived in 1986 with the grand opening of its permanent campus. This significant milestone was celebrated by a symbolic change in identity, as the "Nomads" proudly became the "Cardinals," signifying a settled home and a soaring spirit. Today, York College continues its mission, inviting students to "Sapere Aude, Incipe!" – "Dare to know, begin!" – fostering an environment where curiosity is celebrated and new beginnings are embraced.
