Founded in 1906 as the North Dakota State School of Forestry, DCB has a proud heritage rooted in specialized education. The college's journey included significant affiliations, first with North Dakota State University in 1968, becoming North Dakota State University-Bottineau Branch, and later with Minot State University in 1996 as Minot State University-Bottineau Campus. This rich history of adaptation culminated in its current identity, Dakota College at Bottineau, adopted on August 1, 2009.
