Its journey began as Daytona Beach Junior College, established by the Florida Legislature. From its inception, the college was designed to be a groundbreaking institution, operating initially as a division of Volusia County Schools. This foundational period marked Daytona State as one of Florida's very first comprehensive colleges, setting a precedent for expansive educational offerings that catered to a wide range of academic interests and career aspirations.

The college's commitment to growth and responsiveness to student needs is evident in its continuous evolution. In 1968, its administrative structure was strengthened with the formation of an independent District Board of Trustees. Further reflecting its expanding scope, it was renamed Daytona Beach Community College in 1971. A pivotal moment arrived in 2006 when it transitioned into a four-year institution, culminating in its renaming to Daytona State College in 2008, a title that truly captures its expanded degree offerings and comprehensive academic prowess.
