About Delaware State University
Delaware State University: A historic HBCU empowering students to learn, lead, and serve since 1891.
Delaware State University stands as a proud and pivotal institution, serving as a privately governed, state-assisted historically black land-grant research university. Guided by its inspiring motto, "Enter to Learn, Go Forth and Serve," DSU is dedicated to fostering an environment where students can achieve academic excellence and develop a strong commitment to community impact. Under the leadership of President Tony Allen, the university continues its legacy of empowering future leaders.
Established on May 15, 1891, as the Delaware College for Colored Students, DSU played a crucial role in providing higher education for Black students during a time of significant racial segregation. Its early history saw a name change in 1893 to the State College for Colored Students to distinguish itself, and it proudly awarded its first degrees in 1898. This journey of growth and adaptation continued through the 20th century, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of educational opportunity.
The institution’s commitment to academic rigor was recognized with provisional accreditation in 1945. After a period of development, it officially became Delaware State College in 1948, eventually achieving its current esteemed status as Delaware State University on July 1, 1993. Demonstrating a forward-thinking approach, DSU was also a pioneer among historically black colleges and universities, being one of the first to implement a comprehensive no-smoking policy, reflecting its dedication to student well-being and a progressive campus environment for its 6,623 students.
