About DeSales University
DeSales University: Catholic tradition, a thriving MBA, and a vibrant academic journey await.
DeSales University, evolving from Allentown College, stands today as a testament to academic growth and Salesian tradition. Known for its robust graduate offerings, particularly boasting the second-largest MBA program among Pennsylvania universities, DeSales provides a distinctive educational experience rooted in its rich history and commitment to service.
The university's journey began in 1962, when the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, at the request of Bishop Joseph McShea, embarked on creating a new college. By 1964, Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales was chartered, opening its doors to freshmen in 1965. This foundation quickly matured, achieving full accreditation by 1970, and embracing co-education the same year, marking its commitment to a diverse and inclusive learning environment.
Over the decades, DeSales has significantly expanded its academic portfolio beyond its initial Bachelor's degrees. It introduced master's programs in Nursing (1984), Management Information Systems (1988), and Education (1989), culminating in the launch of its highly successful MBA program in 1991. The institution's dedication to accessibility and growth was further cemented with the establishment of a continuing education department in 1977 and the opening of an evening degree program campus in Easton in 1988. In 2000, its comprehensive evolution was recognized with university status, officially becoming DeSales University, and continuing to serve students with forward-thinking academic programs under leaders like its current president, James J. Greenfield, who began his tenure in 2018.
