About DeSales University

DeSales University: Evolving from college to university, home to Pennsylvania's 2nd largest MBA.

DeSales University offers a distinctive academic journey, evolving from its origins as Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales into a dynamic, comprehensive university. Rooted in the educational vision of St. Francis de Sales, as carried forward by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, DeSales provides a vibrant learning environment focused on practical skills and personal growth, preparing students for impactful careers and lives.

The university's rich history began in 1962, when the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales answered the call of Bishop Joseph McShea to establish a new institution. Receiving its charter in 1964, Allentown College welcomed its first freshmen in 1965. It quickly gained full accreditation and embraced co-education in 1970, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to higher education accessibility and diversity from its early years.

DeSales has consistently expanded its academic offerings to meet the needs of a changing world. It pioneered continuing education in 1977 and launched advanced degrees, including a Master of Science in Nursing in 1984, an MS in Management Information Systems in 1988, and an M.Ed. program in 1989. Its Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, initiated in 1991, has become a flagship, growing to be the second-largest MBA program among universities and colleges across Pennsylvania.

This commitment to growth culminated in 2000 when Allentown College earned university status, officially becoming DeSales University. Today, under leadership like its fourth president, James J. Greenfield, DeSales continues its legacy of academic excellence and innovation, providing an enriching experience where students can pursue a wide range of programs while being part of a community deeply committed to its founding principles and future success.
