From its humble beginnings, operating tuition-free within Dickinson High School facilities, DSU quickly established its own identity with the construction of May Hall in 1924. Like many institutions with a long history, DSU has faced its share of challenges. In 2011 and 2012, the university experienced significant scrutiny regarding enrollment practices and the awarding of degrees to some foreign students who had not completed full coursework. These issues led to an extensive audit and temporary placement "on notice" by the Higher Learning Commission. However, DSU responded with comprehensive reforms, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to academic integrity and institutional accountability.

Through these trials, Dickinson State University emerged stronger, with its accreditation fully renewed for a decade by the HLC, reaffirming its dedication to providing quality education.
