For over 50 years, Divers Institute of Technology (DIT) has been the premier destination for aspiring commercial divers seeking a rigorous and relevant education. Founded in 1968 by a U.S. Navy veteran and a local shipwright, DIT was established with a clear vision: to equip apprentice divers with the essential skills needed to thrive in both inland and offshore sectors of the commercial diving industry. Starting on a barge in Seattle's Lake Union, the institute has continuously evolved its curriculum, adapting to the changing demands of infrastructure repair, new technologies, and safety standards.

DIT's academic strength lies in its practical, hands-on training. The curriculum has broadened significantly over the decades to incorporate critical subjects like Non-Destructive Testing, hazardous materials handling, advanced welding and cutting, and hydraulic tool training, preparing students for the complex realities of underwater work. Despite a memorable incident where its original barge campus sank in 1985, the resilient spirit of DIT's community shone through, with instructors and students leading salvage efforts while maintaining a full schedule. The school eventually relocated to a modern onshore facility along the Lake Union ship canal, continuing its tradition of excellence.

The institute's commitment to setting industry standards is evident in its pioneering achievements. In 2003, DIT became the first diving program in the U.S. to achieve compliance with CSA 275.4, certified by the Diver Certification Board of Canada (DCBC). This prestigious international recognition ensures that DIT graduates meet globally recognized safety and competency benchmarks, opening doors to careers worldwide. Under the leadership of its current owners, who acquired the school in 1998, DIT continues to innovate, focusing on advanced technical training to produce the most qualified professionals in the ever-evolving underwater marine industry.
