Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) stands out as a unique institution deeply rooted in its Mennonite heritage, yet vibrantly diverse and globally focused. Established in 1917 as the "Eastern Mennonite School" by Mennonite church members, EMU's founding vision was to provide a Christian education that went beyond basic schooling, fostering development for God's glory and the blessing of humankind. A significant moment in its history came in 1948 when EMU courageously admitted a local African American student, making it one of the first historically white colleges in the U.S. South to integrate prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
