Eastern Mennonite University

Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) is a distinctive institution dedicated to preparing students to serve and lead on a global scale. Founded in 1917 as the "Eastern Mennonite School" by Mennonite church members, EMU emerged from a vision to provide faith-centered education beyond basic schooling, countering what founders saw as a self-centered secular world standard. This principled foundation led to a significant historical moment in 1948 when EMU became one of the first historically white colleges in the U.S. South to integrate, admitting its first African American student well before the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
