Ecumenical Theological Seminary

The seminary’s journey began long before its formal establishment in 1980, tracing its heritage back to the Institute for Advanced Pastoral Studies, founded in 1957 to provide vital continuing education for Christian ministers. This enduring legacy of lifelong learning and practical theological development evolved when the Institute merged with the Ecumenical Theological Center in 1980. A significant milestone occurred in 1994 when the center officially became the Ecumenical Theological Seminary, marking its formal transition into offering academic credentials, starting with the "Diploma in Christian Ministry" and evolving into today's "Leadership in Ministry Program."

ETS solidified its academic standing by embarking on the rigorous accreditation process with the Association of Theological Schools in 1997, a testament to its commitment to educational excellence. Further cementing its foundation, the seminary received a transformative gift in 2002: the historic building, grounds, and endowment of the former First Presbyterian Church from the Presbytery of Detroit. This generous contribution underscored ETS’s vital role within the community and provided a permanent home for its mission. Today, under the leadership of President Theodore T.
