Edward Waters University

Edward Waters University, established in 1866, stands as a beacon of education and resilience, particularly as one of Florida's oldest historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Born from the vision of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, it has been dedicated to providing transformative educational opportunities for generations, embodying a rich legacy of empowerment and community upliftment.

Its journey began as the Brown Theological Institute, founded by William G. Steward shortly after the Civil War. Despite facing early financial struggles that led to a temporary closure in the 1870s, the institution demonstrated remarkable perseverance. Reopening in 1883 with a revitalized mission, it evolved through several names, ultimately being named in 1892 for Edward Waters, the third bishop of the AME Church. Its early leadership included figures like John R. Scott, Sr., a former Florida Legislator, highlighting its deep roots in both education and public service.

In 1901, the university's resilience was severely tested by the devastating Great Fire, which destroyed its original campus. Yet, Edward Waters rose from the ashes, acquiring new land and rebuilding by 1904. Its academic growth has been equally impressive, transitioning from a junior college accreditation in 1955 to restoring its four-year curriculum by 1960. Since 1979, EWU has been fully accredited as a four-year institution by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), proudly awarding bachelor's degrees and shaping future leaders.
