About Elizabeth City State University
Pioneering education and North Carolina's sole four-year aviation science degree.
Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) stands as a beacon of educational opportunity, particularly renowned for being home to North Carolina's only four-year aviation science degree program. As a proud constituent of the University of North Carolina System, ECSU continues its legacy of innovation and commitment to student success, preparing future leaders and professionals across diverse fields.
Established on March 3, 1891, as the State Colored Normal School at Elizabeth City, ECSU was founded with the vital mission of training teachers for the common schools of North Carolina's colored population. Under its first leader, Peter Weddick Moore, it laid a foundational commitment to education. Over the decades, the institution transformed, becoming a full four-year teachers college in 1937, officially named Elizabeth City State Teachers College. This expansion included training for principals and, by 1939, awarded its first bachelor of science degrees in elementary education.
The university's growth continued rapidly, evolving into Elizabeth City State College in 1963 and then Elizabeth City State University in 1969, reflecting the addition of graduate programs. Its journey culminated in 1972 when it joined the prestigious UNC System, solidifying its role in the state's higher education landscape. The campus itself holds historical significance, with the Elizabeth City State Teachers College Historic District recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, ECSU combines its rich heritage with forward-thinking academic programs, offering a robust educational experience. The institution received a historic $15 million gift from MacKenzie Scott in 2020, the largest single donation in its history, further empowering its mission to provide quality education and impactful research. While facing challenges, ECSU remains dedicated to fostering an environment of learning and growth for its students.
