Empire State University, a distinctive public institution founded in 1971, stands apart for its pioneering approach to higher education. Conceived by then SUNY Chancellor Ernest Boyer, the university was designed to revolutionize access to learning, specifically catering to adult students by removing traditional barriers of time, location, and rigid curricula. With a student body of over 11,400, ESU champions a truly student-centered experience.

Faculty, policies, and procedures are all geared towards supporting learners in achieving college-level learning on their own terms, making quality education accessible regardless of life's demands.

While focused on flexible, often remote learning, Empire State University cultivates a strong sense of community and pride. In a unique demonstration of campus spirit, students, faculty, staff, and alumni collectively chose "Blue the Bluebird" as the university's first-ever mascot in 2020, garnering nearly 10,000 votes. As New York's state bird, Blue embodies the university's connection to its roots and its soaring aspirations for its diverse student body. Led by President Lisa Vollendorf, ESU continues to innovate in higher education.
