Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest

Founded in 1951 as the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, this institution emerged during a period of significant growth within the Episcopal Church. Envisioned as a "seminary for the whole church" by Bishop John E. Hines, it aimed to accommodate the rising enrollment in established seminaries, originating from the central and low church traditions. Today, it continues its vital mission, known for its commitment to theological education and its significant contributions to the church's leadership.

Historically, the Seminary of the Southwest has been a beacon of progress and adaptation. After securing a charter in 1951 and recognition from the Diocese of Texas in 1952, it steadily built its campus, completed by the early 1970s with the gift of the historic Rather House. Facing challenges in the 1970s, the seminary proactively introduced cross-cultural theological education through its Center for Hispanic Ministries, strengthening the Church's outreach. It also holds the distinction of being at the forefront of inclusivity, celebrating the ordination of its first female graduate in 1978, just one year after the Episcopal Church officially approved women priests.

The seminary fosters a robust academic and student experience. The mid-1980s saw a revised curriculum and the introduction of lay theological education, expanding its reach beyond ordination-bound individuals. Its commitment to community is evident in its exceptional alumni support, boasting one of the highest percentages among all US seminaries. Recent decades have brought significant campus enhancements, including new facilities dedicated in 1994 and modern faculty offices and classrooms completed in 2003, all contributing to a dynamic environment for learning and spiritual growth. While "Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest" remains its business name, it has rebranded as "Seminary of the Southwest" to better reflect its expansive vision.
