About Evangel University

Evangel University: Empowering your calling through pioneering Pentecostal arts and sciences.

Evangel University, a private institution founded in 1955, stands as a unique academic beacon. It was established by the General Council of the Assemblies of God with a clear vision: to be the first national Pentecostal school of arts and sciences. This meant providing students entering secular fields with a robust, faith-based educational environment, guided by the inspiring motto, "Your Calling. Our Passion." Today, Evangel continues to honor this legacy, fostering an atmosphere where spiritual growth and academic excellence converge for its 2,112 students.

The university's roots are deeply intertwined with a fascinating piece of American history. Evangel was built on the grounds of the former O'Reilly General Hospital, a vital U.S. Army facility during World War II that served over 100,000 patients. After a brief stint as a veteran's hospital, the Assemblies of God acquired the property in 1954. For years, students lived and learned in the repurposed O'Reilly barracks, a testament to the pioneering spirit of the institution. Over the decades, these temporary structures have been replaced by modern facilities, with the last barrack finally demolished in 2009.

A significant chapter in Evangel's history unfolded in 2013 with the successful consolidation of Evangel University, Central Bible College, and Assemblies of God Theological Seminary. This strategic move, approved by the Higher Learning Commission, created a stronger, unified institution, expanding its academic and spiritual reach. Led initially by alumna Carol Taylor, the university is now under the leadership of President Mike Rakes, who took the helm in 2021, guiding Evangel into its next era of impact and innovation.
