Established in 1965 and opening its doors as the Community College of the Finger Lakes (CCFL) in 1967, FLCC has a rich history of growth and dedication to its students. A pivotal moment came in 2009 with a million-dollar gift from Constellation Brands and the Sands Family, the largest in the school's history, honoring the Sands family's profound commitment to the college and the region. This spirit of community support is visible throughout the campus, including Marvin Sands Drive, the main road leading to the college.

FLCC's commitment to student success is exemplified by its significant campus expansions. In 2012, a new 78,000 square foot, LEED-certified green Student Life Center opened, providing a modern 400-seat cafeteria, a convenient One-Stop enrollment services center, and the college's first auditorium, seating 410. Beyond these impressive facilities, the original building's upper floors have been thoughtfully renovated to include updated classrooms and specialized music recording technology spaces, reflecting a dedication to diverse academic pathways.

With a peak enrollment of 6,935 students in Fall 2010 and a current enrollment of 6,025 in 2024–2025, FLCC continues to be a vital educational hub.
