Established in 1947 as the Columbia Forestry School on the decommissioned Lake City Naval Air Station, it initially leveraged former military structures to educate a new generation. Despite humble beginnings and a brief period under the University of Florida, the institution steadily grew, embracing its role in the state's educational landscape.

Throughout the decades, the college adapted to serve the evolving needs of its community. It transitioned from Lake City Junior College in 1961, expanding its offerings, and later became Lake City Community College in 1970 to emphasize its dedication to occupational training and cultural enrichment for area residents. The most recent and significant evolution came in 2010 when, in a strategic move to offer more advanced degrees, Lake City Community College proudly adopted its current name: Florida Gateway College.
