Edwards, chair of the board of regents, championed the cause in the Florida Legislature, leading to Governor Lawton Chiles signing the bill that authorized Florida's 10th state university. A significant milestone was the generous donation of a sprawling 760-acre site in south Fort Myers by Ben Hill Griffin III, providing the perfect canvas for a brand-new campus designed for the 21st century.

With Dr. Roy E. McTarnaghan appointed as its first president in 1993, the university swiftly moved from concept to reality. Operating initially from temporary offices, a dedicated team laid the groundwork for what would become a thriving academic community. The culmination of these efforts arrived on August 25, 1997, when the doors officially opened, and the first classes commenced on its newly constructed campus, marking a pivotal moment in Southwest Florida's educational landscape.
