About Florida International University

Experience boundless opportunity at Florida International University, a top-tier public research powerhouse.

Florida International University (FIU) stands as a beacon of "Hope, Knowledge, Opportunity" in South Florida, evolving rapidly from its unique origins to become the third-largest university in Florida and the eighth-largest public university in the United States by enrollment. As a Carnegie "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" institution, FIU is a vibrant hub of innovation and learning, deeply embedded in the diverse and dynamic community of Miami.

FIU's history is as compelling as its present. Proposed by State Senator Ernest R. Graham in 1943 and formally established in 1965, the university opened its doors to students in 1972 on the site of a former airport. Its first building was the abandoned air traffic control tower, an enduring symbol of FIU's ingenuity and rapid growth. This unconventional beginning set the stage for a university known for breaking barriers, achieving the largest opening day enrollment at the time and quickly adding lower-division classes to serve its diverse student body, many of whom were balancing full-time work with studies.

Academically, FIU is a powerhouse, home to 11 colleges and more than 40 centers, facilities, labs, and institutes that collectively offer over 200 programs of study. As one of Florida's four state-designated Preeminent State Research Universities, FIU is committed to groundbreaking discovery across a vast array of disciplines, from engineering and international affairs to medicine and hospitality. This commitment ensures a rich, research-driven environment for students at all levels.

Life at FIU is bustling and engaging for its over 54,000 students. The Graham Center serves as the heart of student life, welcoming millions each year. Beyond academics, students can cheer on the FIU Panthers, who compete in NCAA Division I, fostering a strong sense of community and pride. With its substantial annual economic impact and relentless pursuit of excellence, FIU offers a truly comprehensive and impactful university experience for prospective students and their families.
