Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College

Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (FDLTCC) stands as a beacon of educational opportunity, uniquely serving as a public tribal land-grant community college. Rooted in a deep commitment to tribal cultures, values, and spirituality, FDLTCC embraces a dual mission: to empower the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians while also warmly welcoming and providing quality education to non-tribal students from the surrounding communities. This distinctive approach, under the leadership of President Anita Hanson, creates a vibrant and inclusive learning environment where diverse perspectives are valued and celebrated.

The college's journey began with a visionary stride in 1979, when the Fond du Lac Band recognized the indispensable role of post-secondary education in their comprehensive planning. This vision blossomed into action, with Mesabi Community College initiating classes on the reservation in 1985. The unified leadership of the Fond du Lac Reservation Business Committee, coupled with state and community support, culminated in the establishment of the Fond du Lac Community College Center in 1987. A monumental achievement came in 1989 when the State of Minnesota appropriated nearly $7 million, paving the way for a dedicated campus that opened its doors in 1992, realizing President Jack Briggs' dream of a college that champions tribal heritage while serving all.

FDLTCC continued to forge its unique identity, earning designation as a land-grant college in 1994, joining a select group of tribal institutions across the nation. Just a year later, the institution gained full independence and funding from the state, solidifying its autonomy. This commitment to excellence was recognized with its first ten-year accreditation as a stand-alone college in 1999. Today, as a proud member of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, FDLTCC continues its legacy of fostering education and community growth, a journey beautifully commemorated by its award-winning 25th-anniversary celebration in 2012.
