About Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College
A unique tribal land-grant community college blending heritage with academic excellence.
Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (FDLTCC) stands out as a pioneering public tribal land-grant community college, deeply rooted in the vision of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. Founded in 1987, FDLTCC's mission is to provide comprehensive higher education to both tribal and non-tribal students, fostering an inclusive environment that honors tribal cultures, values, and spirituality while delivering robust academic programs.
FDLTCC's history is a testament to community and tribal leadership. What began in 1985 with Mesabi Community College holding classes on the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation quickly evolved through the dedication of tribal and state partners. After a feasibility study and the formation of a task force, the State of Minnesota appropriated nearly $7 million, leading to the opening of a new college site in 1992. This journey culminated in FDLTCC being designated a land-grant college in 1994 and achieving full independence and a landmark ten-year accreditation in 1999, solidifying its place as a vital educational institution.
Today, FDLTCC serves 1,976 students, offering a pathway to success through its commitment to community-focused education. As part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, it provides an engaging and supportive learning environment. The college celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2012 with an award-winning video, highlighting its enduring legacy and the profound impact it has had on countless lives, empowering students with the knowledge and skills for a brighter future.
