Fort Valley State University

Fort Valley State University (FVSU) stands as a proud public land-grant Historically Black University (HBCU) in Georgia, distinguished by its empowering motto: "Be Bold. Be Amazing. Be Prepared." With a vibrant community of 2,182 students, FVSU offers a unique educational experience rooted in a rich history and a forward-looking commitment to student success. The university's origins trace back to a pivotal moment in 1939, when Fort Valley State College was formed through the consolidation of two significant institutions: the Fort Valley High and Industrial School (established 1890) and the State Teachers and Agricultural College of Forsyth (established 1902). This consolidation laid the groundwork for a powerful educational force. Its historical significance was further cemented in 1947 when the state Board of Regents transferred the vital "land-grant" designation, officially designating FVSU as the Land-Grant College for Negroes in Georgia by the General Assembly in 1949 – a crucial role during the era of segregation.

Today, Fort Valley State University, which received its current name in 1996, continues its legacy as a cornerstone of higher education.
