FVSU's story began in 1939 with the consolidation of two pioneering institutions, the Fort Valley High and Industrial School (established 1890) and the State Teachers and Agricultural College of Forsyth (established 1902). In a pivotal move during the era of segregation, FVSU was officially designated as the Land-Grant College for Negroes in Georgia in 1949, marking its critical importance in providing agricultural and practical education to African American students.
