Franciscan School of Theology

The Franciscan School of Theology (FST) stands as a venerable institution dedicated to advanced theological study within the rich Franciscan tradition. As a private graduate theological school, FST is committed to nurturing scholars, ministers, and leaders prepared to serve with compassion and wisdom. Under the leadership of President Garrett Galvin, FST offers a distinctive academic journey, blending rigorous intellectual inquiry with profound spiritual formation.

FST's story is one of enduring mission and remarkable evolution, tracing its origins back to 1854 with the chartering of an apostolic college at the historic Mission Santa Barbara. This deep historical lineage grounds the school in centuries of spiritual devotion and academic pursuit. Over the decades, the institution grew, adapting to the changing needs of the Church and society, eventually moving to Berkeley, California, in 1968 where it proudly became a member of the esteemed Graduate Theological Union, a vibrant consortium of theological schools.

The school's dynamic journey continued into the 21st century. In 2012, FST embarked on a significant new chapter, affiliating with the University of San Diego (USD) and relocating to the beautiful Mission San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside, California. This strategic partnership further enriched its academic offerings and community engagement. Seven years later, in 2019, FST made its final move to reside directly on the USD campus, fully integrating into the university's academic and spiritual landscape. This progression underscores FST's commitment to innovation while remaining steadfast to its founding Franciscan values.
