Franciscan School of Theology

The Franciscan School of Theology (FST) offers a unique and deeply rooted graduate theological education, inviting students to explore the rich spiritual and intellectual traditions of the Franciscan charism. As a private graduate theological school, FST is dedicated to forming compassionate and insightful leaders for ministry and service in a rapidly changing world, all within the context of a robust academic environment.

With a history stretching back to 1854, FST's journey began as an apostolic college chartered at the iconic Mission Santa Barbara. This long lineage underscores a commitment to enduring theological inquiry and formation. The school demonstrated remarkable adaptability throughout its existence, notably relocating from Santa Barbara to Berkeley in 1968, where it joined the esteemed Graduate Theological Union, enriching its academic collaborations.

In more recent times, FST has continued its evolution, affiliating with the University of San Diego (USD) and moving to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside, California, in 2012. This affiliation strengthened its academic offerings and community ties. Today, the school resides directly on the USD campus in San Diego, providing students with access to a vibrant university environment while maintaining its distinct Franciscan identity and specialized graduate programs for those pursuing advanced theological studies.
