Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering isn't just another engineering school; it was conceived with the explicit mission to reimagine engineering education itself. Founded in 1997 by the F. W. Olin Foundation, it emerged from a visionary idea to honor Franklin W. Olin's legacy by establishing a groundbreaking institution dedicated to science and engineering. This unique origin story set the stage for a college where innovation is woven into its very fabric, not just taught, but actively practiced in its development.

A defining characteristic of Olin's early years was the "Invention 2000" program, which invited 30 pioneering students, known as Olin Partners, to help design the college's curriculum. These students actively experimented with assessment methods and forms of engineering education, laying the foundation for a collaborative and hands-on learning environment. This radical approach ensured that Olin's programs were intrinsically student-centric, fostering an atmosphere of active participation and continuous improvement.

Olin admitted its first full class of 75 students in 2002, quickly growing to approximately 300 students by 2005 and now hosting around 390. The college's academic strength lies in its commitment to innovative, project-based learning that empowers students to be active creators of their educational journey.
