Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering stands as a testament to innovation in higher education, uniquely founded in 1997 by the F. W. Olin Foundation with the express purpose of rethinking engineering. Unlike traditional institutions, Olin was built from the ground up by a dedicated group of faculty and its very first students, known as "Olin Partners," ensuring a curriculum deeply rooted in modern engineering needs and collaborative learning. This forward-thinking approach has established Olin as a distinctive private college focused entirely on preparing the next generation of engineers.

The college's history is as engaging as its pedagogy. In a groundbreaking initiative called "Invention 2000," Olin invited 30 high school graduates to help design its academic program, exploring everything from assessment methods to student culture. This direct student involvement from the outset created a vibrant, experimental environment that continues to define Olin's educational philosophy. By 2005, the F. W. Olin Foundation had generously endowed the college with approximately $460 million, securing its future and its commitment to excellence.
