Garden City Community College

Garden City Community College (GCCC) holds a unique place in Kansas's educational landscape as one of its earliest and most enduring community colleges. Established through a county-wide election on April 1, 1919, GCCC opened its doors that very September, making it one of the initial four community colleges founded in the state. What truly sets GCCC apart is its incredible longevity, as it stands today as one of only two institutions from that pioneering group still serving students, a testament to its enduring commitment to accessible education.

Imagine starting a college with fewer than three dozen students – that was the humble beginning for GCCC. Initially sharing facilities in Sabine Hall and Calkins Hall with Garden City High School, the college quickly established its purpose: providing higher education to its community. Just a year after opening, GCCC celebrated its first graduate, Mildred Hope of Garden City, in the spring of 1920, marking the beginning of a long tradition of empowering individuals through learning.
