Gaston College: "Opportunities for Life" with diverse programs across a rich, expanding history.
Gaston College, a cornerstone of public community education, truly lives up to its inspiring motto, "Opportunities for Life." As a dynamic institution, it empowers approximately 20,000 students annually through a comprehensive array of over 100 degree, diploma, and certificate programs. Whether students are seeking to transfer to a four-year university, gain specialized career skills, or enhance their current professional capabilities, Gaston College provides accessible and high-quality pathways for personal and professional growth, making it an essential hub for learning in North Carolina.
The college's rich history traces its origins back to the Gaston Technical Institute in 1952 before being officially chartered by the State of North Carolina in 1963. What began modestly with 19 faculty members and 445 students in temporary quarters quickly found its permanent home in Dallas, NC, by 1964. This foundational period saw rapid growth, including the first commencement in 1965 and the consolidation with the Gaston Technical Institute and the Gastonia Industrial Education Center, solidifying the college's commitment to evolving with its community's educational needs.
Over the decades, Gaston College has significantly broadened its footprint and academic offerings. It has expanded to include the Lincoln Campus and the Kimbrell Campus and Textile Technology Center in Belmont, demonstrating its dedication to specialized training. A landmark expansion in 2005 saw the integration of the historic North Carolina Center for Applied Textile Technology, further enhancing its robust vocational capabilities. Today, students benefit from a supportive and engaging learning environment across three main campuses and various specialized centers, fostering practical skills, academic excellence, and a strong foundation for future success.
