The college's rich history began with the Gaston Technical Institute in 1952, evolving into the modern Gaston College chartered by North Carolina in 1963. It opened its doors to its first students in 1964, quickly establishing itself as a vital educational hub. A significant milestone occurred in 1965 when it consolidated with the Gaston Technical Institute and the Gastonia Industrial Education Center, solidifying its comprehensive offerings. This journey of growth continued, marked by accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1967 and a shift in governance to the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges in 1981.

Gaston College further expanded its specialized offerings in 2005 by integrating the esteemed North Carolina Center for Applied Textile Technology, an institution with roots dating back to 1943.
