About Georgia Gwinnett College

Georgia Gwinnett College: A dynamic, rapidly growing public institution forged for Gwinnett County's future.

Emerging from the vision to meet the burgeoning educational demands of Gwinnett County, Georgia Gwinnett College stands as a vibrant public institution with a robust student body of 12,245. Unlike many historic universities, GGC was purposefully founded in the early 21st century to be a modern, accessible hub for higher education, quickly establishing itself as a pivotal part of the region's academic landscape.

GGC's journey began even before its official charter, evolving from a site that hosted DeKalb College and other institutions in 1987. A dedicated push to establish a local four-year college gained momentum through land acquisitions and significant legislative funding, culminating in the creation of the Gwinnett University Center. This forward-thinking development laid the groundwork for the Board of Regents' momentous decision in 2004 to establish an entirely new four-year college on this prepared campus.

Officially named Georgia Gwinnett College in 2005, the institution swiftly opened its doors on August 18, 2006, welcoming its first cohort of 118 juniors. Under the leadership of its first president, Daniel J. Kaufman, GGC rapidly expanded its offerings, from initial bachelor's degrees in fields like biology, psychology, and business administration, to securing full accreditation in 2009. This rapid growth trajectory underscores GGC's commitment to providing diverse and relevant academic pathways for its dynamic student community.
