Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, established in 1969, stands as a beacon for theological education on the East Coast. Born from the visionary merger of two venerable Baptist institutions – Gordon Divinity School (dating back to 1889) and the Conwell School of Theology (chartered 1888) – Gordon-Conwell embodies a rich heritage of biblical scholarship and ministerial training. With 1,734 students, the seminary is committed to its motto: "Think Theologically, Engage Globally, Live Biblically," preparing future leaders to navigate a complex world with deep faith and intellectual rigor.

The seminary's founding was a pivotal moment for evangelical Christianity, championed by influential figures such as evangelist Billy Graham and Boston pastor Harold Ockenga, with substantial financial backing from J. Howard Pew. Their collective vision was to create a prominent evangelical institution in the East, mirroring the impact of Fuller Theological Seminary on the West Coast. This powerful collaboration ensured that the legacy of training devoted Baptist ministers, which both founding schools upheld, would not only continue but flourish in a new, unified entity.

Gordon-Conwell has also demonstrated a profound commitment to addressing critical societal needs. In response to early criticisms regarding its suburban location, the seminary proactively established the Campus for Urban Ministerial Education (CUME) in Roxbury in 1976, fulfilling its mission to support inner-city ministerial education. This dedication to diverse contexts was further expanded with the founding of its Charlotte campus, illustrating a dynamic approach to theological training that reaches across different communities and prepares graduates for a wide array of ministries under the leadership of President Scott W. Sunquist.
