About Grambling State University

A historic HBCU, Grambling State empowers students through rich heritage and innovative education.

Grambling State University stands as a beacon of educational opportunity, born from the steadfast desire of African-American farmers in rural north Louisiana to educate their community. More than just a university, GSU is a vibrant Historically Black College and University (HBCU) with a profound legacy, offering a unique and supportive environment where students can thrive, connect with a rich cultural heritage, and prepare for impactful careers.

The institution's story began in 1896 when the North Louisiana Colored Agriculture Relief Association initiated efforts to establish a school. With the guidance of Booker T. Washington and the leadership of Charles P. Adams, the Colored Industrial and Agricultural School opened its doors in 1901. Over the decades, it steadily evolved, becoming a state junior college by 1928 and pioneering "The Louisiana Plan" for rural teacher education, ultimately awarding its first baccalaureate degree in 1944.

Renamed Grambling College in 1946, it transformed from a single-purpose teacher's institution into a comprehensive college offering diverse curricula in sciences, liberal arts, and business, earning accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in 1949. By 1974, the addition of graduate programs led to its designation as Grambling State University, marking a new era of expanded academic offerings and growth.

Today, Grambling State continues to innovate and expand, evidenced by its modern 384-acre campus featuring new facilities like a business and computer science building, a school of nursing, and state-of-the-art student centers. The completion of the first digital library on an HBCU campus in 2024 further underscores its commitment to providing cutting-edge resources and a dynamic learning experience for its students.
