Grand Rapids Community College

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) stands as a beacon of educational pioneering, holding the distinction of being Michigan's very first junior college. Established in 1914 as Grand Rapids Junior College, it was founded with a clear mission: to offer college-level courses primarily focused on transfer to the University of Michigan. From its early days operating out of Central High School, GRCC quickly gained recognition for its quality instruction. Within just four years of its founding, the college earned initial accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1918, a testament to its rigorous academic standards. Early course offerings in mathematics, history, rhetoric, sciences, and languages laid a strong foundation, attracting students eager for accessible higher education. The affordability, with tuition initially set at $60 per year and later reduced for residents, further cemented its role as a community-focused institution.

GRCC's evolution reflects its enduring connection to Grand Rapids. In 1944, it expanded significantly by acquiring the Main Building, a historic structure now known as Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall. A pivotal moment came in 1990 when residents voted to separate the college from the public school system, leading to its renaming as Grand Rapids Community College in 1991.
