Originally established as Grand Rapids Junior College, the institution quickly gained recognition, earning its initial accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1918. Its early course offerings – mathematics, history, rhetoric, biology, and physics, among others – were all strategically aligned with university transfer, ensuring students were well-prepared for their next steps. The college's commitment to accessibility was evident from its early days, with tuition significantly reduced in its second year to encourage more students to pursue higher education.

Over the decades, GRCC grew and evolved with the community it serves. After operating out of Central High School for its first ten years, it expanded its footprint, acquiring the Main Building in 1944, which today stands proudly as Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall. This growth reflects a continuous dedication to providing students with modern facilities and a vibrant learning environment.

In a significant moment of community partnership, Grand Rapids residents voted in 1990 to establish the college as an independent entity, officially becoming Grand Rapids Community College in 1991.
