Grand Valley State University

Grand Valley State University (GVSU), affectionately known as Grand Valley or GV, stands as a vibrant public institution nestled in Allendale, Michigan, just a short drive from Grand Rapids. Established in 1960, GVSU has grown into a significant educational hub, recognized for its commitment to "Educating students to shape their lives, their professions, and their societies." With its expansive main campus and additional learning centers across the state, GVSU offers a comprehensive university experience designed to foster academic excellence and personal growth.

The university's origins trace back to a vital 1958 study highlighting the need for a four-year college in Michigan's second-largest metropolitan area, Grand Rapids. Local visionaries spearheaded the effort, leading to the Michigan Legislature's establishment of the college in 1959. Built with foundational support from over 5,000 individuals, organizations, and businesses across West Michigan, GVSU rapidly evolved from its initial enrollment of 225 students in 1963 into the thriving university it is today, adapting its name over the decades to reflect its expanding mission and scope.

As a public, space-grant university, GVSU attracts a diverse student body, enrolling over 22,000 students as of fall 2024 from every Michigan county and dozens of other states and countries. This rich tapestry of backgrounds enriches the campus environment, supported by a dedicated academic staff of 1,760. The Laker spirit is a cornerstone of the GVSU experience, nowhere more evident than in its highly successful NCAA Division II athletic program. The Grand Valley Lakers compete with pride in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), having impressively secured 28 NCAA Division II National Championships.
