Timeline

1958

Michigan Legislature commissioned a study identifying the need for a four-year college in the Grand Rapids area.

1959

Michigan Legislature established the college, driven by local business and community leaders.

1960

Officially established as Grand Valley State College.

1961

The Board of Control selected an 876-acre site near the Grand River for the new campus.

1962

Construction of the first academic buildings began, and James Zumberge became the first president.

1963

Welcomed its inaugural class of 225 students.

1973

Renamed Grand Valley State Colleges.

1987

Renamed Grand Valley State University, reflecting its expanded scope and offerings.

2019

Philomena V. Mantella assumed presidency.
