Its journey began on July 1, 1966, as the Hawkeye Institute of Technology, building upon the legacy of the Waterloo Area Vocational School. A pivotal moment arrived in 1992 when the institution expanded its offerings dramatically, embracing the liberal arts and sciences, thereby becoming a "comprehensive" college.

This expansion, followed by its renaming to Hawkeye Community College in July 1993, solidified its commitment to holistic education.
