Heidelberg University, officially the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg, stands as Germany's oldest university, established in 1386, and proudly ranks among the world's oldest surviving institutions of higher learning. Renowned for its unparalleled prestige across Europe, Heidelberg is a distinguished German Excellence University and a founding member of elite groups like the League of European Research Universities and the Coimbra Group. The university's foundation was deeply intertwined with the historical context of the Great Schism, which led Rupert I to establish the institution, modeled after the ancient University of Paris.
