The college's rich history began with the forward-thinking advocacy of Twin Cities suburban school districts in the late 1960s, which championed the creation of post-secondary vocational schools. This vision materialized in 1972 with the opening of the Suburban Hennepin County Area Vocational-Technical Centers. Over the years, the institution evolved, adopting names like Hennepin Technical Centers in 1978 and Hennepin Technical Institute in 1987, before finally becoming Hennepin Technical College in 1989.
