About Heritage University
Heritage University: A private Washington institution deeply rooted in community and resilience.
Heritage University stands as a testament to enduring education, a private university with a compelling history rooted in the heart of Washington. With a close-knit community of 991 students, Heritage offers an intimate learning environment led by President Chris Gilmer, fostering connections that empower its diverse student body.
The university's journey began in 1907 as Holy Names College in Spokane, Washington, founded by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Over the decades, it evolved, first changing its name to Fort Wright College before making a pivotal move in 1982. This marked a new chapter as the administration relocated to Toppenish, and the institution was renamed Heritage College, operating in both Toppenish and Omak while initially maintaining its Spokane campus.
Heritage University's story is one of remarkable resilience and adaptation. The institution further solidified its focus on its new homes in 1987 when the Spokane campus was closed. Even a devastating fire on July 8, 2012, which destroyed Petrie Hall, the university's oldest building, could not dim its spirit. Through such significant challenges, Heritage has continued to serve its students and communities, reflecting an unwavering commitment to its mission.
