About Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine

Idaho's first medical school, addressing critical physician shortages with proven student success.

The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) stands as a landmark institution, boldly addressing the critical shortage of physicians in the Mountain West region and beyond. As Idaho's first and only medical school, ICOM was founded with a clear mission: to cultivate a new generation of healthcare leaders dedicated to serving communities where medical care is most needed. For prospective students, ICOM offers a pioneering path to a meaningful medical career in a state that truly values its physicians.

The establishment of ICOM in 2016 was a pivotal moment for Idaho, which, despite being one of the fastest-growing states, previously ranked 49th in physicians per capita. Founded by Dan Burrell, in strategic partnership with Idaho State University and key state healthcare and government officials, ICOM was born out of a collective vision to transform Idaho's healthcare landscape. This collaborative spirit ensures that ICOM's curriculum and community engagement are deeply rooted in addressing real-world needs, providing students with a unique and impactful educational experience from day one.

ICOM's commitment to excellence is evident in its rapid achievements. The inaugural class, which matriculated in 2018 and graduated in 2022, celebrated a remarkable 100% residency match rate. This outstanding success not only validated ICOM's robust academic programs and comprehensive student support but also led to its elevation to full accreditation status by COCA. Students at ICOM benefit from a rigorous, patient-centered curriculum designed to prepare them for the challenges and rewards of modern medicine, fostering a supportive environment that champions their journey to becoming highly competent and compassionate osteopathic physicians.
