Iliff School of Theology

Iliff School of Theology stands as a distinguished private graduate theological school dedicated to advanced religious and theological studies. With a history stretching back to its founding in 1892, Iliff has evolved into an independent institution known for its commitment to social justice and academic excellence. It serves a vibrant community of 185 students, providing a unique environment for deep spiritual and intellectual exploration and preparing leaders for a diverse and complex world.

Rooted in the vision of John Wesley Iliff and brought to fruition by his wife Elizabeth Iliff Warren, the school initially served as a seminary for the University of Denver. After a brief closure, it proudly reopened in 1910 as a freestanding Methodist seminary, forging its distinct path. This journey included a significant moment in 1974 when the institution courageously confronted a problematic piece of its past, removing and repatriating a book bound in human skin that had been displayed for decades, marking a profound step towards acknowledging and rectifying historical injustices.

Academically, Iliff is a powerhouse in religious scholarship. Since 1981, it has offered a rigorous joint Ph.D. program in Religious and Theological Studies with the University of Denver, attracting scholars passionate about groundbreaking research. Beyond academics, Iliff cultivates an environment of courage and social responsibility, exemplified by its "Courage Award," established in 2011 to honor those who challenge injustice, and its history of hosting impactful events with leaders like Madeleine Albright and the Little Rock Nine.
