Indiana State University

Indiana State University stands as a vibrant public doctoral university, deeply rooted in a rich history of educational excellence. Established in 1865, it has evolved from its foundational mission of shaping future educators into a comprehensive institution offering a wide array of degrees. The university's journey began on December 20, 1865, as the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute, thanks to a generous $73,000 donation from Chauncey Rose. Its initial and core purpose was to prepare elementary and high school teachers, a mission it excelled at, awarding its first baccalaureate degrees in 1908 and master's degrees in 1928. This commitment to educational leadership laid the groundwork for its expansion.

Recognizing its growing scope, the institution underwent several transformations. It became the Indiana State Teachers College in 1929, then Indiana State College in 1961, reflecting an ever-expanding academic portfolio. Finally, in 1965, in response to a burgeoning student population and a significant diversification of degree offerings, it was officially designated Indiana State University.
