About Indiana University-East
IU East: A community-built pathway to 60+ bachelor's and master's degrees.
Indiana University East stands as a vibrant public regional university, a proud member of the esteemed Indiana University system. Its unique origin story is deeply rooted in local community efforts, evolving from an extension to a fully-fledged campus through dedicated fundraising and civic vision. Today, IU East empowers its 3,490 students with a diverse academic portfolio, offering over 60 bachelor's degree options and a selection of master's programs designed to meet the needs of a dynamic workforce.
The university's journey began in 1967 as an extension, cooperatively operated by Earlham and Indiana University. However, it was the pioneering spirit of Richmond citizens who formed Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc. in 1969, raising over $1 million to construct a new campus. This profound community investment led to Indiana University establishing a regional campus, officially transforming into Indiana University East on July 1, 1971. This act cemented its role as the sixth campus in the IU regional system, with its first dedicated academic facility completed and accredited by 1975.
Academically, IU East has consistently expanded its offerings since awarding its first bachelor's degrees in 1977. Its comprehensive curriculum caters to a wide range of interests and career aspirations, emphasizing accessible and high-quality education. The university celebrated a significant milestone in 2017, conferring its 10,000th degree, a testament to its enduring impact on student success. Beyond its main campus, IU East extends its reach through facilities like the Henry County Danielson Learning Center and off-campus degree programs at the Ivy Tech Community College in Lawrenceburg, further enhancing educational access for regional communities.
