What began in 1967 as an extension at Earlham College, cooperatively operated with Indiana University, evolved rapidly. Through the dedicated efforts of Richmond citizens who formed Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc. and raised over $1 million, the groundwork was laid for a standalone regional campus. This culminated in 1971 when the Indiana General Assembly approved its establishment, officially marking it as Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the IU regional system.

With 60 bachelor's degree options and a selection of master's degrees, students have extensive choices for their academic journey.
