The journey of IU East began in 1967 as an extension at Earlham College, cooperatively run by Earlham and Indiana University. Witnessing the growing need for higher education, Richmond citizens formed Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc. in 1969, raising over $1 million to establish a dedicated campus. This profound community support led to Indiana University formally taking responsibility, and in 1971, it proudly became Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the IU regional system. The campus continued to grow with dedicated facilities like Whitewater Hall and the Student Events and Activities Center, shaping a modern learning environment.

Today, IU East boasts an expansive academic portfolio, offering 60 bachelor's degree options and carefully selected master's programs, catering to a wide array of interests and career paths.
