Institute of Buddhist Studies

The Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS) stands as a beacon for those seeking profound engagement with Buddhist traditions in a modern American context. As a private, non-profit graduate school and seminary, IBS is renowned for its unique position in fostering American-born Buddhist ministers and scholars, making it a pivotal institution for the future of Buddhist leadership.

IBS's roots trace back to a compelling need following the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Nisei Buddhists recognized the importance of developing an educational program for American-born ministers, a role previously filled by those trained exclusively in Japan. Supported by the Buddhist Churches of America, a study program launched in 1949, evolving steadily over the decades to meet this critical demand.

The institute's academic journey culminated in significant milestones, including its incorporation as a graduate school and seminary in 1969. In a landmark achievement, IBS became an affiliate of the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in 1985, later gaining full member status in 2021—the first non-Christian seminary to achieve this distinction.
